PROJECTS
The “Spielscheune” (“Play Barn”) proposal extends the existing Matt primary school with a double kindergarten and day-care facility, conceived as a restrained, elongated timber building along the western edge of the site. The Barn offers a sheltered, protected and nurturing place beneath two large roof sails, where children can playfully take ownership of the spaces and shape their own activities while being carefully supervised. The new building frames the existing schoolyard, protects child-oriented outdoor spaces, and links architecture with landscape through a continuous encounter deck. Kindergartens, day care, school services, and administration are clearly structured, yet flexible. The floor plan is highly efficient, with no circulation areas, and opens outward on all sides to extend the interior space. Cloakrooms, niches, and communal rooms become multifunctional zones for learning, play, arrival, and gathering. Its easily adaptable structural grid, organized in a groundfloor and attic level, provides flexible spaces for both the current program and future uses. The project is shaped by a large roof, timber skeleton, modular system, and low-tech strategy. Low-tech radiant heating and large photovoltaic roofs further reduce the CO₂ footprint during operation and enable a high degree of energy self-sufficiency. Sustainability also derives from minimal ground impact, prefabrication, photovoltaics, green roofs, and circular materials. By omitting a basement, the lightweight timber structure minimizes the CO₂ footprint of construction and allows the building to cool naturally in summer through air circulation beneath the structure, while also limiting the sealing of natural ground surfaces as much as possible. with  //  Amstein + Walther AG, Zürich (sustainability expert)  //  Amstein + Walthert AG, Zürich (MEP)  //  Amstein + Walther AG, Zürich (fire protection engineer)  //  Lüchinger Meyer AG, Zürich (structural engineer)  //  Lüchinger Meyer AG, Zürich (facade engineer)  //  Pfister Modellbau (model maker)
